How to Follow Up With Leads in Your Instagram DMs (Without Being Annoying)

80% of fitness coaching sales happen after follow-up. Here's the exact timing and scripts top coaches use to re-engage cold leads without burning the relationship.

A lead messages you, you have a good conversation, they say "I'll think about it" — and then nothing. You follow up once, get ignored, and move on.

Here's what's actually happening: the lead is interested. They're just busy, distracted, or slightly unsure. They are not saying no. They need one more nudge at the right time, in the right tone.

Data consistently shows that 80% of sales happen after the fifth follow-up contact. Most coaches follow up once. That's the entire gap between the coaches filling their roster and the ones wondering why their DMs aren't converting.

The 3-touch follow-up sequence

This is the sequence high-converting coaches use. Three messages, three different angles, spaced strategically.

Follow-up 1 — Day 3: The soft check-in

"hey just checking back in — did you get a chance to think about the call? no pressure either way, just wanted to make sure i didn't lose you in the DM chaos 😅"

Why this works: it's light, it's self-aware, and it shows you're a human. "DM chaos" is relatable — everyone has it. The lead doesn't feel sold to.

Follow-up 2 — Day 7: The value add

"hey — posted something today i thought you'd actually find useful given what you mentioned about [their problem]. [link/insight]. anyway, still happy to jump on a quick call if you want to figure out a plan. let me know 👊"

This one reframes you as someone who was thinking about them — not chasing a sale. The value (a relevant post or insight) proves it. It's the hardest follow-up to do manually at scale, which is exactly why most coaches skip it.

Follow-up 3 — Day 14: The honest close

"last message from me on this — i know the timing might just not be right and that's completely fine. if it ever is, you know where to find me. genuinely hope you figure [their goal] out 👊"

This is the most powerful follow-up because it removes all pressure. It's genuinely low-stakes. The lead feels no obligation — which paradoxically makes them more likely to respond. Response rates on "final message" follow-ups are consistently higher than any other touch point.

The timing matters as much as the message

Touch Timing Angle Avg Response Rate
Check-in Day 3 Soft, human ~35%
Value add Day 7 Relevance, proof ~28%
Final close Day 14 Permission, pressure-free ~42%

Why coaches don't follow up (and what to do about it)

The honest answer: it's uncomfortable. Following up feels like begging. It feels like you're admitting you need the sale. It messes with your confidence as a coach.

The reframe: following up is a service. The lead expressed interest. Life got in the way. Your follow-up is a reminder of something they already decided they wanted. You're not chasing them — you're giving them a second chance to solve a problem they told you they have.

The other reason coaches don't follow up is volume. If you have 40 live leads at different stages, manually tracking who gets which follow-up and when is a full-time job. This is why the coaches running the highest follow-up rates are using automated sequences — they write the messages once and let the system handle the timing forever.

DM Flow's Sequences feature runs multi-step follow-ups automatically — you write the messages once, set the delays, and every cold lead gets chased up on exactly the right day. 7-day free trial.
